Frequently Asked Questions
From procedures to billing questions and special services, we’d like to put your mind at ease. If you can’t find the answer to your question here, please contact us at our Midtown or Liberty Village locations.
Eye Exams & Appointments
The cost of an eye exam depends on your age, health, and the type of testing required. Our comprehensive exams include advanced imaging and screenings that go beyond a basic sight test. Please contact our Liberty Village or Midtown location for current pricing. If you have vision or extended health insurance, we may be able to bill your provider directly.
A See & Be Seen eye exam is more than just checking your prescription. It includes:
- A full vision check for glasses or contact lenses
- OCT (optical coherence tomography) and retinal imaging to see below the surface of your eyes and detect conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and retinal disease early
- Eye pressure testing and corneal health assessment
- Dilation when needed, to give us the clearest view of your retina and optic nerve
These advanced tests help us provide a complete picture of your eye health and catch issues before they affect your vision.
Dilation gives us the clearest, most complete view of the back of your eye—your retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels. When your pupils are dilated, we can see areas that might otherwise be hidden, which is essential for detecting conditions like retinal tears, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic eye disease.
Not every patient needs dilation at every visit, but we recommend it when we need a more thorough look at your eye health. It’s one of the most effective ways to catch problems early before they affect your vision.
After dilation, your eyes may be sensitive to light and your near vision may be blurry for a few hours. Most people can drive, but if you’re sensitive to light or uncomfortable with temporary blurriness, bring sunglasses and consider arranging a ride.
We do our best to accommodate urgent or emergency needs, and same-day appointments are sometimes available. The quickest way to find out is to call our Liberty Village or Midtown location directly.
Most comprehensive eye exams take about 30–45 minutes. If additional testing is required—such as dry eye assessments, contact lens fittings, or dilation—your visit may be a little longer. We always recommend allowing for about an hour in your schedule.
OCT (optical coherence tomography) and retinal imaging let us see layers of your eye that aren’t visible during a standard eye exam. Think of it like an MRI for your eyes—it captures detailed cross-sections of your retina, optic nerve, and macula.
This technology helps us detect early signs of serious conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal disease—often before you notice any symptoms. Early detection means we can monitor changes over time and intervene sooner to protect your vision.
These scans are an important part of maintaining your long-term eye health, not just checking your prescription.
Children: Annually (sometimes more often if they’re at risk of myopia or learning difficulties).
Adults (20–64): Every 1–2 years, depending on vision needs and eye health.
Seniors (65+): Annually.
If you have diabetes, glaucoma, or other health conditions, we may recommend more frequent visits.
Contact Lenses
Contact lenses sit directly on your eyes, so a proper fit is crucial for comfort, safety, and clear vision. A fitting ensures we measure your eyes precisely, select the right lens type, and assess how your eyes respond to the lenses. This is separate from your routine exam, which focuses on your overall eye health and vision.
Yes, you can purchase contact lenses through us even if your eye exam was performed elsewhere. We’ll just need a valid contact lens prescription. If your prescription has expired, we can schedule a fitting and update it for you.
Billing & Insurance
Yes! We offer direct billing to most major insurance providers. Just bring your insurance details with you to your appointment, and our team will do the rest.
OHIP coverage is based on age and medical need:
- Children (0–19): One comprehensive exam per year, plus follow-up appointments as needed.
- Seniors (65+): One exam every 12 months, plus additional medically necessary visits.
- Adults (20–64): Not covered unless you have specific eye or health conditions (such as diabetes, glaucoma, or retinal disease).
Procedures & Treatments
Yes, in most cases you’ll be able to walk or drive after your eye exam. However, if your eyes are dilated, your vision may be temporarily light-sensitive or blurry for a few hours. We recommend bringing sunglasses and, if you’re unsure, arranging for a ride home.
We do not perform surgical removal in-office. However, we offer a wide range of non-invasive stye treatments—including IPL, radiofrequency, and targeted lid therapies—that often resolve the issue without surgery. If surgical removal is required, we’ll provide a referral to an appropriate specialist.
