What Is the Jett Plasma Pen and How Does It Work?

Dry, gritty eyes can make a full day feel longer than it should. Your eyelids might feel heavy by dinnertime, or your contact lenses might start to drag after just a few hours of wear. If warm compresses and drops aren’t quite cutting it anymore, you’re likely looking for another way to find comfort.

The Jett Plasma Pen is a specialized optometry device used to support dry eye care linked to blocked oil glands by delivering a gentle microcurrent to your eyelids. This approach may help your eyes feel more comfortable and ready for the day.

What the Jett Plasma Pen May Support

The Jett Plasma Pen is often used when warm compresses, lubricating drops, and lid care have not given you enough relief. It focuses on the meibomian glands, the tiny oil glands along your eyelids. These glands help keep your tears from drying too fast by supplying the vital oil they need.

When the oil gets thick or stuck, your tears can feel weak and unstable. That can lead to dry eye symptoms, even when your eyes water. Our optometrists use this treatment to support care for several common eyelid concerns:

  • Dry eye from meibomian gland dysfunction, often called MGD
  • Blepharitis, which means irritated eyelid edges
  • Chalazia, which are lid bumps linked to blocked oil glands
  • Dry-eye-related contact lens discomfort that gets worse throughout the day
  • Watery eyes that still feel dry, tired, or scratchy

Signs Your Oil Glands Need Care

Pay attention to those early whispers of discomfort. You might notice yourself blinking aggressively at your laptop or rubbing your eyes during an afternoon meeting. Reach out to your optometrist if you experience any of these common warning signs:

  • Burning, stinging, or a gritty sensation in your eyes
  • Blurred vision during reading or digital eye strain
  • Recurrent lid bumps, puffy lids, or crusty lashes
  • Dryness with contact lens fittings or daily lens wear
  • Eye fatigue that feels worse later in the day

How the Jett Plasma Pen May Help Dry Eye

Don’t let the word “plasma” intimidate you. In optometric dry eye care, the Jett Plasma Pen uses the non-ablative silver microcurrent tip, not the gold ablative plasma tip used for cosmetic skin procedures. That means the treatment does not remove or intentionally damage the outer skin layer.

We start by placing a smooth, protective gel over the treatment area. The silver tip then glides along your lids, sending a controlled microcurrent to the tissue surrounding your blocked glands. You’ll likely feel a pleasant warmth or a light vibrating sensation.

This gentle energy may help soften thick oil in the glands and support the glands as they contract and relax. The goal is to help trapped oil move out more easily, like a focused massage from within the lid area.

What Happens Beneath Your Lids

On a tissue level, the goal is to support gland function, comfort, and the overall eyelid environment. The microcurrent is intended to provide gentle stimulation to the tissue around the glands without removing or intentionally damaging the outer skin layer.

Potential supportive effects may include:

  • Support for a healthier eyelid environment
  • Support for calmer, more comfortable eyelid margins over a series of visits
  • Support for eyelid hygiene when blepharitis or debris along the lashes is part of the concern
  • Support for a more comfortable tear film environment

What to Expect During Your Visit

Your visit starts with a careful look at your lids, tear film, and symptoms. Your optometrist may review your history with artificial tears, compresses, and past therapies to see if this is the right path for you.

Here’s how the treatment itself works:

  1. Your optometrist applies a local anesthetic cream to help keep your eyelids comfortable.
  2. A conductive gel is placed over the targeted eyelid areas.
  3. The silver microcurrent tip is moved along the upper and lower eyelids, including the lid margin area, as appropriate.
  4. Several passes are made across each area, based on your needs.
  5. The gel is removed, and the treated area is checked before you leave.

A visit often takes about 30 to 45 minutes. In some cases, the team may pair the treatment with IPL and RF dry eye therapy during the same visit.

Aftercare and Downtime

Most people return to normal routines the same day, so you won’t need to book time off work to recover. You may notice mild redness or light swelling, often for a few hours. For some people, it can last a day or two.

Because the silver-tip treatment is non-ablative, it is not expected to involve the scabbing or crusting associated with ablative skin procedures. Keep up with your prescribed at-home lid care, and attend your follow-up visits so your optometrist can track your tear quality and comfort levels.

Combining Dry Eye Care Options

Dry eye disease rarely has just one cause. You might be dealing with thick oil, inflamed lids, and a rapidly evaporating tear film all at once.

This complexity is exactly why your optometrist might recommend a multi-tool approach. IPL targets redness and inflammation around the lids. RF uses warmth to help soften thick oil, while LipiFlow treatment warms and massages the inner lids to help with gland blockage.

The Jett Plasma Pen may support oil flow and calmer lid tissue in a different way from IPL, RF, and LipiFlow.

Our team may also discuss:

  • Prescription eye drops to manage ongoing inflammation
  • Specialized treatments if demodex mites are present along your lashes
  • Daily warm compresses and thorough eyelid hygiene at home
  • Nutritional support for healthy eyes
  • Adjustments to your screen time, makeup habits, and contact lens routines

Discover If the Jett Plasma Pen Is Right for You

You may be a candidate for this treatment if basic care just isn’t resolving your MGD, recurring chalazia, or blepharitis. Early assessment may help guide care before a lid bump becomes more persistent.
